  This painting was done for a competition  held by the Ohio Plein Air Society.  It was a pretty cool idea. The competition took place over a year with the object being to paint an Ohio prairie. (yes, there are prairies in Ohio)  Artists were asked to paint during the year 2014 depicting all seasons and prairies throughout the state.  At the end of the year the paintings were judged and those picked were exhibited in The Springfield Museum of Art. The exhibit titled " Painting the Prairies"  was to help educate the public about the conservation of these small islands of original prairie grassed in the state. 
    I had two paintings excepted to hang in the museum "Thistles" being one.

Hay Bales

   Hay Bales are so much a part of the landscape in the fields around our home. They add such architectural interest in the design of a painting.  
   Earlier on this hike it had rained and the going was quite muddy splashing our calves as we trekked but as we entered an open area the clouds were breaking up and we hoped that sun was in the forecast.

   It was February in South Carolina with colder than average temperatures so I put on a jacket, shouldered by easel and backpack and headed to a sunny location in the lowcountry marsh on a raised walkway. The wind was blowing my canvas but I think the painting looks like a warm summer day. Egrets and Heron fished while I painted.
 

Lost Dog

  We spent February 2015 in Folly Beach, SC.  This year we took our golden along with us. One of the many public places that welcome pets is the Lost Dog cafe.  While Dan, Izzy, and his buddy Larry had their lunch on the large porch i stood on the street and painted this favorite local meeting place.

   This small painting was from my thoughts of a sunset over the dunes by the Atlantic.
I love the way the brush works show in the photograph.  Its said there is a green flash right at the moment the sun dips below the horizon. I keep watching for it.
